Intercollegiate Athletics forms partnership with UC Davis Transformative Justice in Education Center as part of department's on-going DEI efforts
The goal of this partnership is to develop a team-specific approach for student-athletes and coaches to build community together and engage in conversation around different types of injustice, while providing the student-athletes a sense of belonging on campus and enhance their development as current and future leaders on and off the court.
*The cooperative effort is an innovative approach, contributing to the overall mission of the Transformative Justice in Education Center and adding a dynamic component to Intercollegiate Athletics' multi-faceted DEI efforts to substantially move the needle within the world of intercollegiate athletics.
*"This partnership will ensure that, as we prepare our student-athletes to be leaders on and off the field and for future launch in the professional world, we are equipping them with the awareness and the tools to advocate for racial equity," said Smith. "In addition, this partnership will enable intercollegiate athletics to equip our coaching staff with racial equity leadership acumen, which is crucial given their positions of influence with their teams and in the campus community."
*The men's and women's basketball programs are the first to benefit from the partnership, taking their paces through a series of workshops throughout the year that are built around the TJE Center's five pedagogical stances: history matters, race matters, justice matters, language matters, and futures matters.
